April 13: We, the British taxpayers, are mugs for funding the EU

From: Jeremy John Whittington, Easterly Road, Leeds.

THE referendum should be an easy question – do we stay in Europe or do we leave Europe?

The British people are fed up with the European countries taking our British money. There is no control on European expenses and Britain can survive like other countries who are not part of the EU. We, the British taxpayers are mugs. We work hard and our money goes daily to Europe.

Tony Blair, who is now a ‘has been’, should not tell the country that the British people should not have a referendum on Europe. Of course we should. It is the British taxpayers’ money and we should have a say on how it is spent (Bill Carmichael, The Yorkshire Post, April 10).

The country should also wake up and save millions by making the 43 police forces into one English police force.

So I say to the fellow people who can vote this May, keep the Conservatives in as the Conservatives are trying to hard to pay back the vast debt caused by Labour’s 13 years of crazy spending. The Iraq War was the costliest event since the Second World War.

IF you know little about the European Union, you could be forgiven for thinking that it is essential to us as a nation. This is simply untrue.

It is nothing more than a trading area with delusions of grandeur. We do not need to be members to enjoy trading benefits. And no, we will not lose influence when we leave – we haven’t actually got any to lose – other than in the minds of the euro-fanatics, of course.

From: David Nutt, Huby, Leeds.

I HAVE been sorely tempted to pen a response to the ridiculous Mr Blair’s contribution to the EU referendum debate (The Yorkshire Post, April 8), but then I remembered the man’s absolute lack of any credibility whatsoever and decided not to bother. Sorry.

THE arrogance of Tony Blair is breathtaking. He thinks the public cannot be trusted to make a sensible choice on the EU. He still thinks he knows what is best for all of us. He more or less dictated that we went to war in Iraq, yet we are supposed to live in a democracy (the will of the people). Never mind, Tony, you have done what you set out to do, and that was to make money. The trouble is, plenty is never enough for you and certain others.
