WELL done to Bill Carmichael (The Yorkshire Post, June 5) for highlighting the case of David Dorn, an African American former police officer who was killed in cold blood as he tried to defend a friend’s shop from a mob of looters in St Louis.

In the case of George Floyd, a recidivist offender resisting arrest who was killed by a police officer using inappropriate and excessive restraint techniques, you can be sure that it would not have received the same coverage if it had been a black officer killing a white suspect.

The problem with our police is that they are so scared of being accused of being racist that they are reluctant to deal with the black-on-black knife crime rife in London and elsewhere, and from which many youngsters sadly die.

This is also one of the reasons the police and authorities didn’t act when faced with the Asian grooming gangs in places like Rotherham.

The big problem in this country is the mainstream media, which usually displays a liberal, mainly left-wing, bias; so much so that in order to listen to both sides of an argument you need to watch, not the BBC, but, for example, Sky News in Australia.

I SUSPECT that my genome still has a trace of Neanderthal fragment lurking along it. Against who then do I take up arms to remedy sins visited upon my ancestors?

The human race who decimated them, those who enslaved their descendants to build Stonehenge, the Vikings who pillaged and raped, the Norman’s who stole their lands, the Roundheads or the Cavaliers – both equally harsh to the surfs, or the mill owners and taskmasters of the 19th century?

Just who and how far back in time should I go for retribution? Not by reacting with thuggery.

Surely, in this 21st century, we should be learning from the past to shape, at a faster pace, a better future for everyone? Remembering that we all came out of Africa – so yes, black lives do matter, as does every life!

CAN contributors to the letters page please tell us why immigrants of all backgrounds are all trying their damnedest to get into the UK both legally and illegally if it’s true that we are such a terribly racist country?
