Arguments for compulsory vote

From: Martin D Stern, Hanover Gardens, Salford.

Unlike your correspondents (“You can’t force people to vote when democracy is shambles”, Yorkshire Post, May 8), I am all in favour of making voting compulsory.

But only so long as a postal vote is always available and there are safeguards in place for those unable to vote because of factors beyond their control such as illness or having to go overseas at short notice in an emergency.

However, far more importantly, the option of voting for “none of the above” should be included on the ballot paper. Where the latter attracts more votes than any “other” candidate, a re-run should be required and all candidates should forfeit their deposits.

New honour
for Sir Alex

From: Terry Duncan, Greame Road, Bridlington, East Yorkshire.

There has been so much said about Sir Alex Ferguson.

I believe Her Majesty and the Duke of Edinburgh both admire his wit and achievements.

So, would I be impertinent enough to suggest that this Scotsman, who will go down in history, should be created a member of the Order of the Thistle?

That would avoid any political connections.

Someone needs to tell ‘Dave’ Cameron how the nation is governed. His proposals on immigration are illegal under articles 20 to 24 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union.

And for good measure his proposal on cigarette packaging is not within his gift. The law is being decided on this month in Brussels and Strasbourg. I have tabled some amendments myself. Cameron grows more like King Lear every day.
