August 14: Don’t blame the parents

PARENTS aren’t to blame for children not attending school (The Yorkshire Post, August 10). It’s a consequence of the relentless drive for growth and prosperity. When the race gets too intense, some drop out and some cheat. With parents too busy trying to earn a living, they’ve no time for their kids.

WHAT has happened to common sense? Surely it should be up to head teachers to use their discretion and decide whether a child can have time off in term time? Holidays can be educational experiences. After all, health and safety means many schools have cut back on geography field trips.
