August 21: A postcard from Filey after a perfect day at the seaside

From: Kate Dale, Helperby, York.

AFTER reading Jayne Dowle’s article (The Yorkshire Post, August 17) about declining numbers visiting the seaside, I felt compelled to reassure her that visitors in Filey last week busted every myth.

The weather was sparkling every day (apart from Friday), the bay was turquoise blue and the beach stretched out like a crescent of gold. Families enjoyed quality time together with no arguments or tensions with everybody happy in their activities. The only expense incurred was the price of an ice cream or fish and chips for the day visitor and perhaps the odd football or bucket and spade for the beach.

Having gone to Filey on holiday for over 50 years (we have been to other places too!). We all love its timeless charm and comfortable familiarity. This year we enjoyed the company of four generations of our family sharing lunch in a beach chalet, looking out across the bay with walks and sandcastles on the beach and paddling in the sea. Admittedly, the weather does make all the difference, but we never tire of gazing into the far horizon, feeling the sea air in our faces and thanking our lucky stars we have such a beautiful place to go whenever we need a seaside fix.Rest assured Jayne, lots of people still love to be beside the sea!
