Balance words with actions
JULIAN Smith MP is spot on regarding the wasteful and bureaucratic nature of the European Union and how Yorkshire taxpayers are getting a raw deal (Yorkshire Post, January 25).
However, it would be interesting to see him try and justify his decision to recently vote against allowing his constituents the chance to have their say in a referendum over EU membership.

Hope for the future
From: John Gordon, Whitcliffe Lane, Ripon.
I AM grateful to Mr Andrews (Yorkshire Post, January 23) for a full exposition of his ideas about Christianity and Classics.
I agree that one brought us our notion of human vulnerability and the other our notions of the law. But I think these ideas evolved gradually as we evolved; they were not God given at the dawn of time.
It follows then that we may develop these ideas yet further as time goes on. That is my hope for the future.

Hide AdCAN someone please explain to me how or why Wakefield is included in the list of local authorities to vote for an elected mayor when it is a city only so by virtue of its cathedral (Yorkshire Post, January 27).
By the same principle, presumably the cathedral cities of Ripon or St David’s in Dyfed should equally be eligible?
