Ballet company will carry on

From: Laraine Penson, director of communications, Northern Ballet.

I AM writing on behalf of the whole of Northern Ballet to thank the Yorkshire Post for its considered and considerable coverage of the Arts Council funding announcements.

The Yorkshire Post has always given the company, and the arts in general, excellent support throughout the years, sharing our news, celebrating our achievements and, on this occasion, commiserating our loss.

We are naturally disappointed at the decrease in our funding but we know that Northern Ballet will carry on and feel rightly proud that our home is here.

England needs its parliament

From: Fred Bishop, Lower Moor, Worcestershire.

ON April 1, we English found a national dress that the British government will approve of. The fool’s cap!

We drink to the good health to our neighbours in Scotland and Wales and hope that we live long enough to join them in that exclusive group of UK countries that are allowed a government to fight their corner.

Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales have two governments each working for them, England has one and that one is working against us. Time for an English parliament.

DEFRA and scientists are now suggesting that farmers feed their livestock more cereals and corn and less “Doctor Green” to help rid the earth of greenhouse gasses. This is, in my book, akin to suggesting that vegetarians eat more beef, port, lamb and other meat products.

German lesson

From: Brian Sheridan, Redmires Road, Sheffield.

I DON’T envy Bill Carmichael, who hopes to impress a young Bavarian visitor to Yorkshire. (Yorkshire Post, April 1). According to David Quarrie on that day’s letters page: “In every direction ... we are but a pale shadow of Germany.”
