Ban on forced marriage right

From: Bob Watson, Springfield Road, Baildon.

PRIME Minister David Cameron rightly says that the Government is making forced marriage a criminal offence, (Yorkshire Post, June 9).

He continued that the practice is little short of slavery, with young girls flown to the other side of the world and introduced to a person they are going to be forced to marry.

I think that most right-minded people would agree wholeheartedly, but it should also apply to arranged marriages.

This Third World practice should have no place in modern society, and it is time for it also to be outlawed, and classed in the same way as forced marriage, which it too often appears to far too closely replicate.

I WROTE on the subject of the Hayward Gallery’s forthcoming exhibition of invisible art (Yorkshire Post, May 23) – obviously with tongue in cheek as it would be difficult to treat the project otherwise.

On a topical note, I hear that ticket sales have soared following the addition of a life-sized portrayal of the England women’s synchronised swimming team in their new invisible swimsuits. A response is awaited from the men’s weightlifting squad to whom a similar invitation was sent, as required under Equal Opportunities legislation.

Please note tongue again still firmly in cheek.

Good omens

A RECENT talk with a library staff member revolved round the month of June 1975. I was reminded of the EEC referendum, the Nuneaton rail crash and snow stopping play at a cricket match in Buxton. So given that it turned out to be a good summer, there is hope for us yet.
