Better uses for water cannons
SO Boris Johnson is being asked to fund water cannons to be used by the Met to control the rioting masses. Given that Mr Johnson cannot find the money to keep 10 London fire stations open, I sincerely hope the answer is no.
But this is Boris the so-called lovable buffoon. Still, I suppose they could always use the water cannon to put out the fires that won’t be dealt with by the fire stations.

Police duty

I WAS amazed to see the report by Rob Parsons “Chief turns beat cop to make arrest” (Yorkshire Post, January 21). What is the big deal with this story? Why did the Chief Constable of West Yorkshire have to talk about the arrest?
Every police officer holds the rank of constable and Mark Gilmore has a duty to arrest offenders just as the constable(s) alongside him have. Will he commend himself or will his arrest lead to a QPM in the next honours list?
Sensible move

WITH reference to James Reed’s article about the re-use of road chippings (Yorkshire Post, January 23). What a sensible thing for East Riding Council to do – recycle the road chippings after the roads have been swept. When I was told a long time ago, that the piles of “sweepings up” from the road sweeper lorries were sent to landfill, I was horrified.
It’s about time other councils followed East Riding’s example.
