Boundary changes for city are preposterous

From: Iain Morris, Caroline Street, Saltaire, Bradford.

THE Bradford Metropolitan District, with a population of 522,500 (2011), is represented by five MPs and with one of the fastest growing populations in the country should continue to be so.

The proposed boundary changes which it is estimated would give the Conservative Party 20 extra seats at the next General Election are preposterous when it comes to our own city.

The famous Shipley constituency which covers both my home in Saltaire and that of Mr Bob Watson in Baildon (Yorkshire Post, August 8) would completely disappear. I believe he would have to vote for a Leeds Metropolitan District MP in Guiseley.

Other chunks of Bradford would have to vote for this MP and another Leeds MP too. Voters in the Worth Valley in Keighley would be transferred to a Calderdale constituency.

It would leave parts of the city and metropolitan district not represented by our own MPs who would number four instead of five. So although Mr Watson may have valid opinions on why the boundary changes are not on, he may rejoice as a Bradfordian in the hope that those who would be ‘little’ Bradford, as so many do, have a change of heart and allow us all five of our Parliamentary seats in a brighter future for Bradford.
