Britain’s shameful death toll from virus; why Ministers are to blame

From: Trevor Dufton, Wilsden, Bradford.

WELL, we have got it done. We have managed all by ourselves to come top of the league in Europe for deaths from Covid-19.

This despite being an island nation with a supposedly competent Government,
world-class scientists and the much-vaunted NHS.

How have we achieved this terrible and tragic accolade? I am sure there will be many questions asked when some sense of normality returns but, among many factors, I do think this Government must bear considerable responsibility.

Are testing protocols sufficient for Covid-19?Are testing protocols sufficient for Covid-19?

We seem to have an arrogant government of, at best,
second-rate and condescending ministers who bluster but are economical with the truth – for example PPE, testing, international comparisons.

They seem to be equally arrogant in not following what seems to be successful in other countries – Germany and South Korea – but insisting on going our own way regardless.

However, the biggest charge against this Government is that, despite protestations that they are protecting the most vulnerable in our society, the evidence is the opposite, given the carnage in our care homes.

From the outset, it was obvious this group would be the most vulnerable and they are now paying the price for the Government’s neglect and incompetence with their lives in very large numbers.

Let us hope the Government will pay with their jobs when this nightmare diminishes, but I suspect they will bluster their way out of any true contrition or responsibility.

From: Stephen Wild, Wakefield.

I THINK Boris Johnson and his Government are doing a good job under very difficult circumstances and it does not help with all the negative views from the media, especially TV.

Some of the presenters think they are the voice of the people and bad-mouth the Government for everything.

What about some positive news by telling us things are slowly getting better?

From: Brian Sturdy, Honley, Holmfirth.

IF one cannot have a decent lifestyle on a salary of a million pounds, it is a sad reflection on the greedy, inconsiderate state of affairs this country has reached.

I suggest anyone earning over this amount donate the surplus to Treasury funds – overpaid
so-called celebrities, show hosts, footballers, commentators and chief executives, for example.

Editor’s note: first and foremost - and rarely have I written down these words with more sincerity - I hope this finds you well.
