Child killers will enjoy a life far removed from their victim’s

From: Barrie Frost, Watson’s Lane, Reighton, Filey.

IT is truly appalling that it took the death of four-year-old Daniel Pelka to free him from his nightmare existence, following the horrific abuse he suffered from his mother and stepfather (Yorkshire Post, September 18).

No one can possibly know what went through the mind of this little boy when he woke up each morning.

Children of this age, in an advanced civilised country, wake up to a world they see as magical; a world of play, laughter, love, care and protection, and when the day, too quickly, comes to an end, a supper and good night’s sleep surely follows. But, to little Daniel Pelka a new day simply brought new terrors, unbelievable torture, the forced eating of salt, beatings and being locked in a box room and denied any food.

For him, there was no playing out, no joy, no going to bed exhausted from the day’s pleasures; to him going to sleep was the one and only time the abuses of the day may, for the next few hours, be stopped.

Even this relief, though, is very doubtful and may not have happened as he was being starved and probably this would not have even allowed him this respite.

Throughout all of this indescribable treatment, no one came to his help. What fear did he have, alone in this huge world, how did he regard all of his fellow human beings when not one of them took the trouble to free him from this outrage?

Did he believe all humans were the same and his plight was, somehow, normal?

There were 27 police logs made between 2006 to 2011 about his home and domestic issues, but was this a criminal waste of time, as no action was taken?

Social services care was, it seems, non-existent; his hospital was easily conned into accepting his broken arm was a mere accident and teachers who saw him “wasting away” (he weighed one-and-a-half stone when he died) did nothing.

A child with multiple bruises and appearing like a concentration camp prisoner was unworthy of investigation – unbelievable. When Daniel Pelka stole food from the lunch boxes of others even this did not trigger any alarm bells.

Have we now arrived at the
state when degree diplomas
and exam certificates
allow no room for the most
basic common sense and decency? And, if God felt it inappropriate to come to Daniel’s aid it really does strengthen the view that “God works in mysterious ways”.

Of course, yet again, we are told “lessons will be learned”, but they never are, are they?

There have been four similarly horrendous child murders in the last 13 years and after each one this statement is made and each time it is made we know nothing will be learned.

And, what about his murderers, his mother, Magdelena Luczak and stepfather Mariusz Krezolek?

Well, they have been given life prison sentences with minimum jail terms of 30 years. But not for them the conditions they inflicted upon four-year-old Daniel, oh no, they will sleep in a single, heated prison cell, they will receive three meals every day, they will get medical and dental care, they will enjoy entertainment and sports facilities and all this will be provided free of charge and their treatment will be claimed to be that of a civilised country like ours.

We certainly know how to treat child murderers in such a civilised manner. What a pity we don’t know how to ensure children are treated in the same civilised way. Words fail me.
