Civil life in the blogosphere

From: BJ Cussons, Curly Hill, Ilkley.

HAVING reflected at how sad it was that people from so many walks of life have nothing better to do, nor have genuine friends, that they resort to blogging, Facebook and Twitter in order to fill their time, I learn that Francis Maude and other Ministers are to order hundreds thousands of officials to start using social media to “communicate with citizens”.

Cast iron proof that we have too many overpaid, over-pensioned, underworked Civil Servants if proof is indeed needed. Apart from the cost of setting up an instruction booklet, can we imagine how it will all be abused?

Causes of war

THE reason we have wars is because every nation in our world stupidly believes that we need to have an Army. And in order to have an Army all countries create poverty because all countries depend on the poor to build an Army. Another gem created by governments is to bestow the squalid principle of medals.

Bible doubt

From: John Gordon, Whitcliffe Lane, Ripon.

THE atheist Richard Dawkins says he approves of the Bible being given to each child in a faith school because the King James’s translation is a powerful influence on English literature.

Does he expect the children to read it from cover to cover? I have never met anyone who has done that (perhaps I should get out more) but surely some adult guidance is necessary. There are parts of the Old Testament that are really frightening.

School days

From: Robert Leakey, Giggleswick, Settle.

REGARDING the Giggleswick School article (Yorkshire Post, June 20) and the question of what are the seven wonders of the modern world, it was good to see Giggleswick School in the news again.

As someone aged 98 who has long lived in Giggleswick, I also remember the involvement Giggleswick School had with the great Patrick Moore of The Sky at Night television programme when he visited.
