Clutter in the countryside

From: Keith Chapman, Custance Walk, York.

FOLLOWING the latest incident when a hot air balloon hit power cables (Yorkshire Post, April 14), should areas with a high volume of cables come under restrictions for flying balloons?

Wind turbines are being sited all over the countryside these days, putting passengers in danger on their pleasure flights.

I can see why many in our community object to seeing our countryside scattered with clutter such a power transmission lines and wind turbines – you can see the sense of it now.

Heritage of the back-to-backs

From: M Clayton, Avenue Hill, Leeds.

I READ with interest your article on the empty back-to-back houses in Leeds (Yorkshire Post, March 30).

When I was running my house as a guest house several years ago, an American came to stay to research the back-to-back houses in Leeds. He asked me where he might find some and I told him of a few I knew of. He even came back a second time to continue his research.

With the culture of elitism in Leeds, some of the areas where there are back-to-back houses have been left to rot and the article mentions Leeds City Council demolishing rows of such houses.

They are destroying the heritage of Leeds.

ISN’T it time to recognise that the idea of equal rights is impossible to implement across the board? If you grant rights to one group or person, you are not recognising the rights of the other group or person.

The more we try to grant equal rights, the more of a quagmire emerges.

Life would be better if we were actually to look to the founding principles of society – namely honour, truthfulness, integrity and love and awareness of our neighbours.
