AS of July 4, Boris Johnson will graciously allow me to visit my local for a long-awaited drink on condition that I provide the establishment with my contact details, which I assume will include my name and telephone number.

In running my business, I have to comply with the Data Protection Act and ensure that all my clients’ details are securely stored to ensure they cannot be access by a third party.

Before I give my details to my local hostelry, several questions need to be addressed including – who is holding this information, how is it to be stored, for how long will it be kept, who will have access to it, and who will it be passed onto and who will verify that the information is correct?

It is also suggested that payments are to be by debit or credit card.

If so, could card payments be matched with names and contact numbers?

We are constantly being advised by government and banks to be careful with our personal details to avoid being scammed.

The new arrangements would appear to make this easier.

Until I am satisfied that my details will be securely stored, it is unlikely that I will be rushing back for a well-deserved pint.

If you can, safely, please buy a paper or take up a subscription. We want to continue to make you proud of Yorkshire’s National Newspaper but we are going to need your help.
