Consultants and the council

From: Rick Sumner, chair, East Yorkshire Eye, Cliff Road, Hornsea.

FOLLOWING the publication of my recent letter on exorbitant pay for senior East Riding Council officers, I have been contacted by several people who all raise more or less the same point.

The ERYC always tries to justify these high salaries by telling us that they have to pay this level of money to attract and retain the very best and most able people.

If this is, indeed, the case, then the question that springs to mind is why is the council paying out huge sums of money every year to hire consultants to tell these experts how best to do their jobs?

Would it not, perhaps, be a better idea to dispense with the senior officers and hire the consultants instead?

Eyesore on our verges

From: Mrs JAC Todd, Bewholme, Driffield, East Yorkshire.

I AM writing in support of Matthew Shaw (Yorkshire Post, March 22) and quite agree the litter on our roadsides and grass verges is appalling, an eyesore and disgrace.

For the last 10 or so years, I have been picking it up from the places within three miles of my home, putting it in bags, sorting it and placing it in either our own dustbin – the green one – or the correct recycling bin.

I suppose I am a member of the Big Society, being over 70 years of age and retired. If more of us did it, the country would benefit.
