Council leaving us in the dark

From: Don Metcalfe, Annes Court, Southowram, Halifax.

LINDA Riordan’s article on Halifax’s library and archives (Yorkshire Post, January 30), was quite illuminating. Should I believe what she has written? I certainly should as it reveals the workings of a council who do not like their plans to be known. The sentence: “Even elected members are left in the dark” shows that if some councillors do not know what is happening, how can we, the rate payers, know?

Calderdale Council, ask the right question and the public will give you the right answer.

I AM an avid reader of Jayne Dowle’s column and usually agree with what she writes. However, I must disagree with her about treatment at the hands of the NHS (Yorkshire Post, January 30). For the last 10 months, I have been having treatment for cancer, firstly in Harrogate Hospital. I was then referred to the Bexley Wing at St James’s in Leeds. I have always been treated with the utmost courtesy and kindness. It makes me wonder if we are talking about the same NHS.

Sound of silence

From: Ruthven Urquhart, High Hunsley, East Yorkshire.

REFERRING to Martin Vallance’s letter (Yorkshire Post, January 31), I have often been informed that the definition of a “Scottish Gentleman” is one who can play the bagpipes – and doesn’t!

Women’s turn

From: Iain Morris, Caroline Street, Saltaire, Bradford.

I THINK it is about time that women were given the chance to rule the world because after all these centuries, looking around the world, men are obviously still failing.
