Councils and wasteful jobs

From: T Patchett, Lower Bradshaw, Slaithwaite.

I FIND it quite ironic that five or six years ago the majority of job vacancies advertised were from local councils.

Many of the jobs had spurious titles which were relatively meaningless and full of jargon along with a quite well-paid salary which we, as ratepayers, had to finance.

If only the powers-that-be at that time had employed existing staff to efficiently do the jobs for which they had been employed. “Excess” staff would not now be being made redundant to meet budget cuts.

Scargill’s return

From: Roger M Dobson, Ash Street, Cross Hills, Keighley.

HOW terrible it was to see Arthur Scargill raising his head again and claiming victory for his union 30 years ago.

When is this fool going to accept that he was well beaten by Margaret Thatcher and crawl away into complete obscurity?

IN The Diamond Queen on Monday evening, the Queen’s personal, moving tribute to Princess Diana in the days following the fatal car crash was shown. Up popped Tony Blair to contribute: “By the way, those words and that speech were her own.”

The man’s arrogance knows no bounds.

Roots of English

From: Derek Hough, Scotton. North Yorkshire.

I READ the letter from John Gordon (Yorkshire Post, February 18).

I have to point out when the Danish Vikings invaded and settled eastern and northern England (then Northumbria and East Anglia) the inhabitants were Anglo Saxon. The Celts had been kept in Wales, Cornwall and also parts of Devon.

English was evolved from Saxon and Danish. Sorry John.
