Coverage of Royal wedding makes keepsake for the future

From: John Gordon, Whitcliffe Lane, Ripon.

THANK you for the splendid coverage of the Royal wedding (Yorkshire Post, April 30). There was nothing to equal it in any of the national newspapers. A keepsake for the future.

The whole occasion seemed to me to be almost 100 per cent Victorian, a look back at our glory days, a few modern touches but a panoply of noble scarlet uniforms and prancing horses.

WHAT a wonderful day April 29 turned out to be. A spectacular Royal wedding with most of the country showing how proud and great it was to be British.

Considering all the unrest, poverty and hate in countries around the world today, we should be honoured to live in this country of ours and to have a Queen and family devoted to it. I hope all the carpers, moaners and republicans look for a republic to emigrate to and give us all a rest and once there see if they are allowed to criticise like they do here.

From: John Watson, Hutton Hill, Leyburn.

WHAT a spectacle. Even a republican would have been impressed with the organisation of what went on in London on Friday. We must be the only country in the world who can stage such a celebration without the schmaltz which you often experience on such occasions and which can spoil the whole experience.

I thought all members of the Middleton family performed their duties exceptionally well, and if anyone wants a lesson in Bible reading, they should have listened to Kate’s brother, James, during the service.

I have been a critic of the monarchy in the past but not from a constitutional point of view. I believe now, that with the wind of change the institution has experienced over the last two decades, it will enable it to last for another millennium.

Congratulations William and Kate. When the time comes, you will do the monarchy proud.

From: Roger M Dobson, Ash Street, Cross Hills.

HAVING been one of the millions who watched the Royal wedding, I feel that the whole country owes the Royal family for the spectacle that has done nothing but good for the country.

Where else in the world can one see such precision as practised by our armed forces and what other country, if any, can provide such security as was demonstrated in London?

The Royal couple demonstrated their obvious aptness to take charge of the monarchy in the future. Far more so than the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall.

From: Jane Coleman, Yeadon, Leeds.

HOW refreshing for the Archbishop of York to talk about his understanding of cohabiting couples, ahead of the Royal wedding, as he gave his blessing to Prince William and Kate Middleton living together before their marriage.

It is the kind of pragmatism that has been so lacking in the Church of England for many years.

ONE thing is certain – Huw Edwards is not a broadcaster in the mould of David Dimbleby.

He does not have the gravitas required for Royal weddings and other such occasions. Another example of BBC dumbing down.

From: Malcolm Naylor, Grange View, Otley.

THE public need something to raise their spirits, but it is questionable if mass hysteria over a Royal wedding is the right way as the monarchy is no longer the glue that binds the nation together.

From: Aled Jones, Mount Crescent, Bridlington.

TWO people got married on April 29, and two billion people watched it. Clearly, the world has gone raving mad. This vulgar event smacked of prejudice, snobbery and authoritarian elitism. The latter is the mortal enemy of democracy. So where was all the outrage?
