Covid evidence should be published to restore trust – Yorkshire Post Letters

From: Michael Green, Baghill Green, Tingley.

YET more depressing news about coronavirus (The Yorkshire Post, October 29). And I don’t mean the item about this region having the highest prevalence of the disease in England, though this is depressing enough, especially in the absence of anyone with the knowledge or the intelligence to provide information about the reasons.

No, what is really depressing, and quite ominous actually, is that “Ministers in the House of Commons and the Prime Minister’s official spokesman have both insisted discussions have been ongoing with West Yorkshire for a number of weeks” but “Bradford Council leader Susan Hinchcliffe rejected the claim”. This before West Yorkshire was placed under Tier 3 restrictions later that day – due to come into force today, but cancelled due to new measures.

It really doesn’t matter which politicians it is who are telling untruths. The duplicity reflects adversely on all of them. There’s little enough trust already – partly due to their failure to share the evidence with the rest of us. Public squabbling about matters of opinion is bad enough. When it’s about facts, is there any hope left? And the tragedy is, that I don’t think any of our politicians actually care. Other than about themselves. If they think I’m wrong about that, then let them prove it. Please. Now.

WHY are so many people saying that missing one Christmas with their families will ruin their lives? My children and their families live in Greater London and Essex and, in normal times, we only see them two or three times a year at best and never at Christmas due to work and other commitments.

I’m sure there are many thousands of families in the same boat every year. I’m pretty sure, also, that we aren’t all sitting gibbering, in therapy about a quiet festive season being a living hell. Get over it, things could be a lot worse.

I REALISE that the country, along with most of the world, is going through a very serious crisis, but I would be pleased if, for once, we could acknowledge that the Government is doing as much as possible to mitigate all the difficulties that various sections of the population are encountering. I listen to the Today programme and am beginning to despair that anyone is ever going to be satisfied with what the Government proposes.
