Credit for workers’ bright ideas was stolen

From: RD Leakey, Giggleswick, Settle, North Yorkshire.

IN the Yorkshire Post, there have been lists of famous Yorkshire people inviting us to choose the greatest. Of those mentioned the two I have met are Alan Bennett and Amy Johnson.

However, above all these people I would suggest should be a whole set of others. The Yorkshire Post has got it wrong about who are Yorkshire’s true greats. Many of those who launched the Industrial Revolution were here in Yorkshire – people like Michael Faraday who produced the first man-made electricity.

Over two thirds of all the industrial revolution inventions originated in Yorkshire.

However, usually not from well-known names but teams of workers who made mistake after mistake until they got their inventions right. Any credit to them was taken up by their bosses who probably themselves never touched the tools or got their hands dirty in the actual work of producing the inventions.

MAY I firstly congratulate the Yorkshire Post on their first- class coverage of rugby league. This I have enjoyed for many years.

With dismay I read in your nominations for the Greatest Sporting Legend in Yorkshire you fail to nominate a rugby league player.

Shame on you. Surely you’ve heard of Ellery Hanley and Jason Robinson, both Leeds lads of the modern era.

How many column inches have they filled on your sports pages with their sporting genius? Just to mention their names gets me dreaming about how talented they were.
