Criticism of Mensch’s decision to quit ‘puzzling’

From: Paul Morgan, Wilderspin Heights, Barton-upon-Humber, North Lincolnshire.

I’M a little puzzled regarding the criticism of Louise Mensch following her resignation from Parliament to follow her husband to New York, especially the piece by Jayne Dowle (Yorkshire Post, August 13).

Surely all Ms Mensch is doing is exercising her right to make a lifestyle choice, something most of us do at various stages in our lives?

Many years ago I turned down a promotion that would have involved moving my family to a far flung part of the country, which I did not think was right at the time. No different I think, but following the logic of Jayne and some of your correspondents, I was wrong.

Ms Mensch probably does have enough money to employ a nanny, but that doesn’t mean she is obliged to do so.

As Ms Mensch’s husband works and is based in New York, sharing childcare duties does seem a little impractical.

As for criticising Ms Mensch’s lack of public duty, I wonder what such duties Jayne and your correspondents perform, and how much they would sacrifice in order to continue doing them?

Ms Mensch chose a job with public duty obligations, but now her personal circumstances
have changed, and she has resigned. I don’t see the issue. It certainly didn’t warrant a complete column in your newspaper.
