Doing a flit
into the past

From: Barbara Gatford, Grange Park Road, Ripon.

TO continue the flitting theme of Bruce Jackson (Yorkshire Post, July 14 and August 4), I grew up in Skipton where “flit” was a common word for moving house, and “they’ve done a moonlight” (i.e. flit) was used of people who had moved with amazing speed, for whatever reason!

On another theme, my husband’s family from Ripon would say “who’s going to ‘side the table’” after a meal i.e. to clear the table of dishes.

A further expression in the family was “them that set, don’t side” – a clear delineation of tasks within the family.

Sporting mark

From: Graham Branston, Emmott Drive, Rawdon.

SOME Olympians have the famous five rings tattooed on their body. Some professional footballers have their bodies covered in tattoos. The former is a permanent reminder of true sporting achievement, the latter of having more money than sense or perhaps bragging rights in the showers!

Simple answer

From: JR Renshaw, Currer Street, Bradford.

STEPHEN Regan, of Wigan, correctly points out (Yorkshire Post, August 15) that in the new soccer season Lancashire will have five clubs in the Premier League and Yorkshire none.

Confirmation, perhaps, of the old saying: “Soccer is a simple game for simple minds.”

Road to ruin

I was considering writing to complain about the fact that our roads in Yorkshire are deteriorating rapidly and akin to the potholed roads of rural Azerbaijan. Then, I was pleased to note a small road near me had been resurfaced.

However, the dressing is so totally inadequate that weeds are already growing through. It looks like a job carried out by the cheapest contractor.

Rates haven’t gone down, so, even in times of austerity, spending on roads should continue.
