Don’t forget clout of silver voters

From: John Rookes, Bramley, Rotherham.

T CRAGGS was right to point out that pensioners have paid their taxes and national insurance contributions all their working lives (Yorkshire Post, May 8).

These people are a credit to this country and helped to put the great into Great Britain and should not be denied any benefits. Several of their benefits have been attacked over time – free TV licences, winter fuel allowance and so on.

The arrogance of MPs to suggest that wealthy pensioners surrender their free bus passes is scandalous. They should surrender their passes, when, and only when wealthy MPs surrender their ministerial Jags, Range Rovers and so on.

The quiet man Iain Duncan Smith should be careful what he wishes for and not forget the clout of the silver voters.

Tory ivory tower

From: Norma Bartle, Cottingley, Bingley.

David Cameron. I have never voted Tory in the whole of my voting life. I am 71. But I promise you that if you are able to address a good part of the following issues at the next election I will vote Conservative.

Stop all the excessive funding to other countries that have no reason to expect our support.

Send back immediately all the terrorists to where they belong.

Put more regulation on banks who drip our money away.

But most of all come down from your ivory towers and attempt to experience what us the ordinary electorate have to deal with day in and day out.

One vote? Believe me, if the above was achieved many thousands would follow.

Church houses

From: David Treacher, Nelson Road, Hull.

WE hear Church leaders speaking about the injustice of the bedroom tax and about the homeless. But most of them live rent-free in large detached houses, with often only two people living there.

Do these people need such a large house? Most have a wage, so why don’t they pay rent for their house, like the rest of us do? Are they out of touch with life as it is when preaching to their flock on Sunday morning?
