This Virgin Money text betrays my decades-long loyalty to Yorkshire Bank – Yorks...

FRIDAY March 13 lived up to its bad luck reputation this year. The postman delivered two letters, the contents were definitely unwanted. The Bingley branch of Barclays Bank wrote to tell me my local branch would close in June this year.

In January 1961 my parents and I, aged 18 years, moved from Bradford to live in Bingley where I have resided since. I opened my personal bank account that summer and remained with the bank continuously, having had a business account and joint account with my deceased wife.

Now 59 years of loyal connection to the branch is to be severed. Barclays is the last British bank in the town. I feel very let down and I am sure hundreds of local people feel the same.

The second letter was from the BBC, telling me my two years free TV licence will end by June 1 (now deferred to August) unless I receive pension credit. I do not, so will have to stump up £157.50.

The BBC, being the media face of left-wing politics in the UK, needs the cash to keep up the relentless bias against the cruel Conservative government, prop up multiple layers of needless bureaucratic management and fund the lavish lifestyle of countless alleged stars. Therefore they could not possibly cope without my contributions!
