Ed Miliband’s housing error

From: Alexander Ogilvy, Lindsey Avenue, Acomb, York.

It is unbelievably callous of the Labour leader, Ed Miliband, to want to punish jobless people further over council housing.

It is difficult enough for the poor or people without a wage to find housing at present with inflated house prices, rising private rental costs and reduced housing allowances, without giving preference for council housing to those in employment.

They are more likely to be able to afford to buy a house anyway, whereas those who are unemployed may otherwise face homelessness.

Time out

From: K Walker, Scarborough.

REGARDING Shipley MP Philip Davies on disabled people and paying them to work at a lower rate than the minimum wage (Yorkshire Post, June 18), his remarks in the House of Commons were not very helpful.

I am disabled and every day is a challenge. I can only assume he is living in the wrong century – even country. Perhaps he would be more at home in 1939-1945.

Tragic reminder

From: Mrs DM Priestley, Fixby Road, Huddersfield.

I READ with sadness and disbelief the tale of Sarah Dawson (Yorkshire Post, June 16) whose baby died at Dewsbury Hospital.

This issue was being highlighted more than 30 years ago. Can this still be happening? Babies do not consult the clock when they decide to enter the world. Surely their survival should not depend on the time of day?

Research call

From: A Wills, Dulverton Road, Ruislip, Middlesex.

I WAS sorry to read of the death from leukaemia of Bishop Ambrose Griffiths, the former Bishop of Ampleforth Abbey (Yorkshire Post, June 17). There should be more research and attention paid to the causes of such serious blood diseases.
