Even our grandchildren appreciate the Dales

From: Arthur Cockroft, Plantation Avenue, Temple Newsam, Leeds.

I READ with interest the article by Sarah Lee of the Countryside Alliance (Yorkshire Post, September 19) stressing the importance of young children learning to love the great outdoors and the responsibility of educational authorities in recognising and implementing this duty.

However, I was surprised that no reference was made to the even greater responsibility of parents in bringing up their children to appreciate how lucky they are to have the Yorkshire Dales, Wales, Derbyshire, the Lake District and Scotland within a half day journey from home.

My late wife and I took our children to all these wonderful locations, using youth hostels, caravans, rented cottages etc as accommodation.

I am delighted to say this has rubbed off on our children and that all of our grandchildren are the beneficiaries of this appreciation of the wonders of the English countryside and carry on this tradition.

Until the threat of litigation is lifted from the shoulders of teachers on school trips, let us concentrate on educating parents of the benefits of our wonderful countryside to their children.
