Excessive cost of green policies

From: Dr SU Ruff, Gowland Court, Ogleforth, York.

I WANT to express my wholehearted support for the views expressed by Carl Minns, the leader of Hull Council (Yorkshire Post, March 7).

At less than three per cent, the UK’s contribution to environmental damage is laughably negligible in the global context. Yet central government and local authorities are wasting huge capital resources on wind farms, voltaic cell energy, “environmentally friendly” buses, domestic energy saving schemes that will take decades to pay for themselves – the list of green medal seekers is endless.

But all this effort is undermining the competitiveness of British manufacturing industry by making its energy supplies unnecessarily expensive, diverting resources from essential infrastructure projects and robbing taxpayers of spending power.

If only there were more Liberal Democrats like Coun Minns who were prepared to send their council’s mail to Leeds in order to save £100,000.

Relatives of pupil sought

From: Roberta Hunt, 4 Gough Place, Cheddar, Somerset.

I WONDER if any of your readers are related to Alan Hewitt who attended Headingley National School in 1933.

I recently bought at a charity shop a small dish which is about five inches in diameter and has obviously been handmade and carefully decorated. On the bottom are the words: “Alan Hewitt. Headingely Nat. School, Leeds. 20.2.33”

While I find it absolutely delightful, I’m sure that any of his relatives would be even more pleased to have it. I can be contacted at the above address.

One too many

From: Jack Kinsman, Stainton Drive, Grimsby.

EVERY week, we see – on television – the police taking drunk people home in police vehicles. Is this right?

The public must ask themselves: Who made this person drunk and incapable? Is it against the law to be drunk and incapable? Is this the best use of police time and energies?

Would the police be willing to treat a druggie in the same manner?
