February 5 Letters: Time up for Chilcot as public awaits the truth

From: Mrs W Abbott, Boulsworth Avenue, Kingston Upon Hull.

THE Labour MP Frank Field is right to assert that David Cameron “demand a date” for the publication of the long awaited report into the Iraq war (The Yorkshire Post, January 30).

It is interesting to note that of the five people on the Chilcot Panel, not one person is under the age of 66.

Furthermore panellist Sir Lawrence Freedman is a former Foreign Policy Advisor to Tony Blair.

Am I right in thinking that this is disproportionate? The news that the inquiry is to be kept under wraps until after the General Election comes as no surprise since both leaders of the main parties fear the effect the report will have at the ballot box should the report be published in advance of the General Election.

David Cameron has said “it would not be right” for the Government to intervene.

However, some people will see the Prime Minister’s decision as a weakness and he could lose support as a result.

The Chilcot Inquiry could turn out to be the biggest political fiasco of the 21st century.

Even when the inquiry’s report does finally get published, I suspect that a large proportion of the British public will be extremely disappointed with
the results.
