Flagging up stone thefts

From: M Clayton, Avenue Hill, Leeds.

I AM just writing to advise readers to look out for York stone thieves while workmen are installing new street lights in their neighbourhoods. The flagstones do not always disappear from the road when the workmen are working, but from side streets nearby. They usually disappear in batches from outside houses with high hedges or from outside end-of-terrace houses where the end wall has no windows.

When the flagstones were stolen from in front of my house, I got in touch with Leeds City Council and they have now written to say they will arrange for the flags to be reinstated in the next two months.

Happy moments

“And they all lived happily ever after.” What a yarn – we know they didn’t. A constant state of happiness is an impossibility.

However, there will have been many instances and occurrences which will produce minor happiness. Perhaps such as an empty dishwasher; a newly-mown lawn; a mower that starts first time; an unexpected windfall; the warm smile of a loved one and the first sign of spring. I am sure other readers’ lives will produce a different list.

Noise nuisance

From: Phil Hanson, Beechmount Close, Baildon, Shipley.

WE are now entering the season when our wild birds are starting to nest. So how come people still insist on using fireworks to celebrate? I thought that fireworks were for Bonfire Night, one night in November, so why do garden centres and so on still promote sales around the year?

Are these people ignorant of the effects or just plain greedy and ignorant?
