I FULLY agree with the well written article by Colin Hart (Yorkshire Post, October 13). I have been very pleased to be one of the 600,000 signatories of the petition against the suggested mis-use of the word “marriage”.

I can add little to Colin Hart’s article except to point out that the present use of the word marriage applies to males and females because of the long history through Christianity of using Scripture, tradition and reason to make decisions. Until recently our Government has maintained that right use of the word “marriage”.

Politicians have no right to change the meaning of a word just to please a minority of people.

Honour lost
in translation

I READ that RC Curry (Yorkshire Post, October 13) would like to see our very own Dr Sentamu, Archbishop of York, be elevated to Canterbury.

However, this was somewhat lost in translation by describing this process as the “translation of Ebor to Cantab”. Latin scholars might remember that this is York (Eboracum or Eburacum) to Cambridge (Cantabrigia), not Canterbury (Cantuaria), which is abbreviated to Cantuar, not Cantab.

WHILE I agree with Ian Tomlinson (Yorkshire Post, October 6) that American golf fans can be rather noisy, I would like to explain to him that the booing to which he refers was not actually booing, but fans of Luke Donald shouting “Luuuke!”

Usually the commentators take pains to explain this to viewers, although I did not hear this during the Ryder Cup.

I hope he does not give up playing golf.
