Harvey wrong on ‘wimps’

From: Mrs June Wolfe, Sutherland Road, Lightcliffe, Halifax.

THANK goodness no horses were killed in the Grand National (Yorkshire Post, April 8).

However, I can’t agree with Harvey Smith when he says that the “wimps” would try to ban everything, ie boxing and motor racing.

The difference here is that boxers and racing drivers choose what they do, but horses have no choice.

Lack of action on road repairs

From: Ryan Smith, Guiseley, Leeds.

HAVING blamed the cold weather for not repairing potholes, I see Leeds City Council has still not started to make our roads safer – even though spring has arrived.

Yet it would be the first to act if we did not pay our council tax in protest at its failure to provide basic services.

Comparing like with like

From: Dr Sally Blackburn, Granary House, Harrogate.

THE letter from Joyce Gregg (Yorkshire Post, April 6) about women sitting in front of the fire and getting mottled legs reminded me of my father who died many years ago.

My brother and I were brought up on a hill farm in Yorkshire and I can recall dad saying to my younger brother: “Niver wed a lass wi’ piebald legs, lad.”

I suppose he thought such a woman would spend more time by the fire than getting on with the housework.
