Heart decision a symptom of rotten democracy

From: Malcolm Naylor, Otley.

THE loss of children’s heart surgery in Leeds in spite of a petition of 600,000 people exposes just what a sham our democracy really is (Yorkshire Post, July 5).

It isn’t the voice of the people that’s listened to. It’s the balance sheets of the bankers, the privileged and wealthy who pull the strings. On the same day as the loss of children’s heart surgery was announced it was also reported that one million children are now undernourished and lucky to get one meal a day.

We were also regaled with the news that the new director general of the BBC will take home a modest £450,000 annual salary. Justified by declaring it is less than his predecessor who got £650,000!

Inequality is rampant and the British Establishment, rotten to its core is the cause. Bankers, aristocrats and the monarchy are the maggots that feed upon us.

The responsibility for this decay is the Establishment whose sham democracy fools and befuddles the minds of its victims.

The wishes of the public are ignored as we saw with the one million who took to the streets to oppose the Iraq war and who are denied any say on our membership of the European Union. Democracy is a figment of our imagination fostered by perpetual propaganda telling us how lucky we are.

And here we are now faced with the prospect of sick children and families being forced to travel to Newcastle for life-saving surgery.

The answer lies not in the ballot box but in our own hands. It’s time to start using them to tear down the citadels of the Establishment.
