Henry Cooper remembered

From: Neville Balmer, Sicklinghall, near Wetherby.

SOME 30 years ago, I was invited to a junior boxing night at the Norfolk Gardens in Bradford sponsored by Thorn Heating. Henry Cooper was the guest of honour and I was lucky enough to be sitting on his table.

Halfway through the evening one little fellow, possibly 12 or 13 years old, suffered a real pasting and the bout was stopped.

As soon as the next bout had started, Henry gets up and whispers: “I’ll just go and see that the little fellow is okay.”

Five minutes later, he re-emerges holding the child’s hand, sits down at the table and plonks him on his knee. This spontaneous act of kindness is something I shall never forget.

Missed whisper

HOW sad, on the weekend that the World Championships ended in Sheffield, to learn about the passing of the great snooker commentator, Ted Lowe, (Yorkshire Post, May 2).

His “whispering” style was unique and he spoke only when he knew that his words would add to the pictures. If only the current commentators did likewise.

Teachers and violence

MORE than one in 10 head-teachers has been attacked by a parent of a pupil at their school, according to new figures. This is not really news, as it has been going on for some years. As the last gutless government didn’t do anything, I advocated the teachers go on strike. Nothing was done except a few belligerent noises from the unions. But threaten their finances and see what happens.

All together

WE feel the Royal wedding was good for the country as it brought people together as groups and goodwill were much in evidence. More unity of purpose please from everyone. It is only by pulling together that we will succeed.
