How the beauty has faded at resort’s tennis club

From: Brian Sheridan, Redmires Road, Sheffield.

MANY years ago, I played at the Scarborough Tennis Club on Filey Road. On a recent visit to the resort, my wife and I walked round the club which used to be noted for its beautiful location and superb grass courts.

The extensive site is now a sports centre but, apart from the addition of what looked like a small sports hall, everything had been left as it was when the Yorkshire Championships were last held there circa 1970: as if some latter-day Miss Havisham had decreed that nothing should change.

Most notably, the stands from which I have watched Fred Perry, Don Budge, Pancho Gonzales and Ken Rosewall – the latter two in their prime – are in a state of advanced decay.

I write as much in curiosity as in sadness. What do local residents think of this eyesore?

If commercial tennis could not be sustained, why has the site not been redeveloped further for other purposes while safeguarding the tennis club?

Surely there was money to be made during the times of economic boom.

I apportion no blame to the tennis club nor Scarborough Council but I would love to know more.
