I REFER to your recent article about the Sutton Bank vintage glider event and the mention of the iconic White Horse of Kilburn.

Sadly two or three years ago, the Forestry Commission relieved the Kilburn White Horse Association of Kilburn of maintenence which they had carried out diligently for
decades.

I understand the reason for this “land grab” was cited as being on the grounds of health and safety.

Having taken responsibility for the monument, they are now failing to maintain this Yorkshire icon. For some time the White Horse has been a very shabby grey horse.

I understand that various bodies and people have approached the Forestry Commission with a view to re-dressing the monument, but to no avail.

I am making enquiries with Historic England and it would appear that the White Horse is not a listed monument – when things such as some simple roadside monuments are. This is a fact which, to me, is
inexplicable.

What will it take to get the Forestry Commission to pull its finger out and restore this much loved Yorkshire monument to its former glory?
