Immigration threat to a tolerant nation

From: Mrs BJ Cussons, Curly Hill, Ilkley, Leeds.

MARTIN Hickes (Yorkshire Post, May 16) has dredged up one of the old chestnuts that the English themselves are the products of early immigrants. Life has moved on and those very early immigrants have welded themselves into a nation of primarily tolerant people with a general respect for a law abiding society.

This is a result of our forbears’ belief in a “moderation in all things approach” which has been abused by too many of more recent immigrants.

Sadly, too many of those are not of the same ilk and extremism in life and religion prevails. It is more than ironic that they come from, yet continue to practice, cultures which are so extreme that terrorists of their own kind are allowed to stay in this tolerant country at enormous expense – and danger – to our residents.

Did we have a significant drug trade in our cities some 25 years ago? Did we have a large number of men regularly abusing women for both self-satisfaction and for money? Did we have dishonourable killings? The really worrying thing is that there is very little reaction by moderate immigrants to all that is happening in those areas.

Stupid liberal thinkers who speak for multi-culturalism rather than integration have done almost irreparable damage to our country. There is scarcely a country in the world where cultures co-exist peacefully and happily unless the incomers are prepared to give their loyalty to the country they seem to want to live in, rather than to extreme religious practices.

The future intake to be forced on us by the dictate of other European countries is unacceptable. We already have significant instances of theft, and the corruption, orphanages, and poor standing of countries with residents waiting to come in will produce an impossible drain on our welfare services which is why more and more of us are saying “enough is enough”.

WHAT a splendid article by Bill Carmichael (Yorkshire Post, May 17) about the abuse of young girls in half a dozen of our towns and cities. He has put his point across without sounding racist or anti- Asian.

We can’t get away from the fact that what we have seen in the media is that most of the people arrested for grooming young working class girls are of Asian origin.

News footage on TV gives the impression that women in some Asian countries are second class citizens. Are the imams in the mosques preaching the same ideology? In some countries they can’t drive a car and lack education. But we also know that sex crimes in these countries would mean severe punishment, even death. The imams have a great responsibility, their messages are very powerful and they should preach that being good British citizens is possible without being involved in criminal or subversive activities.

These last two weeks I have been watching a programme about Bradford, as it is today. I have been totally surprised and impressed by the way enterprising individuals have worked hard building new businesses. They put some of our young men to shame. If all immigrants are anywhere near what I have seen, then Bradford has nothing to worry about.

Life should mean life

THE Home Secretary is to be applauded for her announcement that a life sentence should be just that.

It is right to recognise that the police do need to have the support behind their actions to keep the peace and with regard to their special and at times dangerous work. However, this should not mean that the lives of any other citizens are of lesser importance.

The words “life sentence” should mean just that for all who receive such a penalty for the ultimate crime. The only possible exceptions might be for offenders who are young children and who may not have had the right upbringing in life, as has often been the case. Such does not diminish the responsibility to support and recognise our obligations to the police.

Eurovision exit now

From: Janet Berry, Hambleton, Selby.

ANYONE who watched the Eurovision Song Contest contest on Saturday evening will realise that we must leave the EU immediately! Let’s face it, we are just not on the same wavelength. I have always thought we had more in common with Commonwealth countries.

We do make daft decisions as why would we put a middle-aged singer whose voice is not what it was against young vibrant performers but still when you watch the completely silly Greek offering and the alarming Romanian entry which received
a significant amount of votes,
you wonder just what is
going on.

Scandinavians still stick together as do former Soviet Union countries, but still...

A Romanian man wearing a long dress wailing in a high pitched voice while a nude looking figure emerges from
a silk sheet? The Greeks wearing skirts and prancing around singing a weird folk song interspersed with the lyric Alcohol is Great.

Bonnie Tyler must have wondered what she was doing there, as perhaps we did!
