Impatience no excuse for breaking rule of road

From: Hugh Rogers, Messingham Road, Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire.

GRACE Hammond (Yorkshire Post, June 7) is quite right in her conclusion that existing motoring laws are perfectly adequate to cover offences such as lane hogging (how long is too long?) and tailgating, and that what is needed isn’t tinkering by politicians but more police patrols.

Where I take issue with her is in her arrogant description of lane hoggers “we’ve all seen them, bumbling along at near 70 mph for mile after mile... getting in everyone’s way”.

She evidently doesn’t realise it as she has already been done for speeding, but 70 mph is the legal maximum. She has no right to imply that it is ok to go faster than this, breaking the law in the process.

I also use motorways and although I try to obey the “rule of the road” and keep to the left, much of the time this is impossible because the inside lane is clogged with HGVs.

Under these circumstances, I will often have to drive for considerable distances in the middle lane, which I will do at or around 70 mph.

To go faster would be illegal. Under these circumstances I don’t see why I should make any concessions whatever to “girl racers” like Grace Hammond, who are perfectly at liberty to use the “fast” lane if they are that anxious to get to wherever they are going a few minutes before I do.

Perhaps ministers could include the offence of being impatient in their list of new transgressions.
