Industries owe debt to under-threat museum

THE news that uncertainty hangs over the future of the National Railway Museum in York is deeply disturbing. This is without doubt the premier museum of the area and one we cannot afford to lose!

The NRM provides a wealth of information both to the historian and student of British railways.

As a National (Science) Museum, it seemingly cannot charge for admission so must rely on government funding and/or donations. Many UK industries have or remain associated with our railway heritage. It is surely within those, the first possible sources of additional revenue may be found to ensure this iconic institution survives.

Without the NRM, present and future generations will be much the poorer!

JAYNE Dowle is so right in her reaction to the proposed closing of the Media Museum in Bradford and the Railway Museum in York (Yorkshire Post, June 10). History in all its forms contains the building blocks for the present generation to learn and enjoy future enterprises.

If the continuance of all these Northern museums is in doubt due to lack of finance, the current administration should be stood down.

New blood should then be found with new ideas installed at once with an “open doors” policy for starters.
