January 20 Letters: Tory victory would bring return to misery of Victorian times

From: Dr Glynn Powell, Bakersfield Drive, Kellington, Goole.

THE forthcoming General Election is one of the most important in decades for ordinary people.

Should the Tories win, democratic rights will be seriously eroded, the NHS fully privatised and the economy ruined.

In terms of democratic rights, workers in public services (including the NHS) will find it nigh impossible to withdraw their labour in defence of decent wages or maintaining vital services that benefit the elderly and infirm.

This is obvious given the intentions to, yet again, attack trade union rights.

The Tories are quite content with simple majority votes in elections, but this democratic formula is not good enough for trade unions.

What hypocrisy!

The NHS will be fully privatised with “customers”, not patients, required to fund their care via private insurance and national insurance contributions, to ensure that health companies maximise profits at our expense.

As for the economy, manufacturing industry
will continue its decline,
with the Tories ideologically pursuing policies that only favour service industries
such as banking and
insurance.

The majority employed outside these sectors will suffer from employment in low-paid, menial jobs.

As such, prices (especially utility bills) will continue to soar, resulting in millions of workers having to survive on food handouts from charitable organisations and food banks.

In conclusion, a Tory victory will result in a journey backwards in time to mid-19th century social conditions rather than those experienced in the 1920s and 1930s, with the divide between rich and poor being enormous.

IT is clear that in the 21st century the international threat is from terrorism, rather than any country. Which means that the possession of nuclear weapons doesn’t aid our security, being an expensive and needless luxury.

So we should not replace Trident, and switch the savings to preventing the vast welfare and social cuts that George Osborne is promising if the Tories are re-elected.
