Joined-up thinking

From: CD Round, Lee Lane East, Horsforth, Leeds.

SURELY the best solution to providing super fast broadband is for the Government to introduce a Bill to make the ISP companies form a joint company to provide superfast broadband through the country and charge the user a flat rate rent in exactly the way the GPO (now BT) did when the telephone system was laid 100 years ago?

Wind farms no risk to defence

From: David F Chambers, Sladeburn Drive, Northallerton.

I AGREE with David H Rhodes (Yorkshire Post, July 10) that a hostile force could wreak havoc on our off-shore wind farms, given the current state of our navy, but even if the attacks were completely successful would this have any effect on our power supply?

The conventional sources would simply step up their output towards their designated capacity, incidentally reducing the waste caused by working at tick-over speeds.

Good luck to those more hostile forces!

Prescribing exercise

From: Hilary Andrews, Nursery Lane, Leeds.

MANY overweight people go to their GP for a magic pill that would melt their fat away. Wouldn’t it be a good idea if GPs were allowed to prescribe gym membership as a treatment?

My gym costs £19.95 a month. There are highly qualified personal trainers who work out a programme tailored to each individual’s needs.

This includes the elderly (me), people with arthritis, heart or breathing problems etc.

They also give excellent dietary advice.

Regular attendance and encouragement helps one to stick to the programme. Surely this would be cost effective for the NHS?
