June 15: We need a TV debate before a referendum on Europe

YOUR headline (The Yorkshire Post, June 9) referred to a warning from Open Europe (whoever they may be) that leaving the EU would leave Britain with a skills shortage. When I left school in 1964, the education in Britain must have been the envy of the world because, as I remember, students that left university used to be headhunted by companies from all over the world.

It seems that Britain now needs these skilled people from Europe, now why would that be? In my way of thinking, it is one of two things, Britain is unable to educate the young scholars to a high standard for the modern world or graduates are being paid less than workers from overseas.

Before the referendum takes place, there should be a large debate on the TV with MPs and representatives from business people that wish to stay in Europe and MPs (and which should also include Nigel Farage) and representatives from businesses which say we don’t need Europe to trade. This referendum is going to be biased in favour of staying in the EU.

THE hypocrisy of Prime Minister David Cameron is amazing. He has the gall to urge the world’s business and political elites to stamp out corruption but completely overlooks the fact that this rampant in Britain.

One has only to look at the behaviour of bosses in the banking and energy sectors, let alone the number of captains of industry seeking to avoid paying income tax.

IT has recently been reported that another four lorries had been discovered with 68 illegal immigrants inside. The news cited that these people had been arrested. This is bad news for the British taxpayer as these people now join an ever-growing queue of people who whilst being processed will be paid for by me and you. In effect these migrants have won and we have lost.

The Government needs to remove all the incentives that drive these people here, starting with no handouts and imprison indefinite until removal and this should include all asylum seekers. Our nation has a reputation for being a “soft touch” which needs to change as we face yet more cuts to balance the books. As for EU migrants, they should get reciprocated benefits with their home nation at best.
