The language of laughter

From: John Gordon, Whitcliffe Lane, Ripon.

I HAVE seldom read a funnier letter about learning foreign languages than the one you printed by Don Alexander (Yorkshire Post, October 25).

I have pasted it in my scrapbook. It seems that his contact with other languages has made him a master of his own. He has made some brilliant points to encourage a linguist and his letter should be posted on every school noticeboard.

Health funding through tax

I’M not convinced about the new Health Lottery. For surely the National Health Service should be financed out of taxation, rather than having to depend on the nation’s gambling habits?

Mind you it’s the same with Help for Heroes. The Government has got us involved in these unpopular wars, and should therefore ensure that the victims of any conflict are well looked after.

Joy to read from start to finish

From: Pat Kellett, Aspin Oval, Knaresborough.

I WOULD just like to say how much I enjoyed Tuesday’s Opinion and Analysis (Yorkshire Post, October 25). Each article was so down to earth and true. It was a joy to read from start to finish.

My husband (Arnold Kellett) was once the editor of Transactions of the Yorkshire Dialect Society, and he would have been delighted to know that Yorkshire dialect was still being kept alive.

Strange way to treat travellers

BARRIE Frost (Yorkshire Post, October 22) is puzzled by the name “travellers” given to those at the Dale Farm site in Essex.

I am puzzled as to why British individuals (many of them children) who have lived in this country for generations are treated in this way, when illegal immigrants are welcomed with open arms and not treated in the same uncompromising way.
