Leeds Council refuses to listen over bus and cycle lanes – Yorkshire Post Letters

IN 2018, people were asked by Leeds City Council and Metro if they want a new bus lane and improved cycling facilities on the section of the A660 that runs across Headingley Hill.

The proposed changes would involve setting back a high stone wall which dates back to 1840, the loss of at least 20 mature trees, part of the fields that seven rescue horses currently graze on, and narrower pavements.

The results of the consultation showed that 76 people are opposed to the new bus lane, and only 30 in favour. The results also showed that 51 people are opposed to improved cycling facilities (often on environmental grounds) and that just 35 are in favour.

Given the strength of opposition to the proposals, it came as a surprise to many to learn that Metro is now asking for the £5.1m required for the road widening to go ahead.

What’s the point of having a consultation exercise when the results are ignored? It’s a waste of people’s time and public money.
