A lesson in democracy

From: N Schofield, Sheffield.

I’D like to compare two ways of taking decisions.

First, in the EU. All proposals are scrutinised by Ministers from the elected governments of the 27 members, can be amended, and are then voted on.

Then in virtually all cases they are scrutinised again by our elected MEPs, can be amended, and are voted on.

But how are Michael Gove’s changes to the A-Level and AS-Level system scrutinised and voted on? Who apart from Mr Gove has any say in what happens?

And Mr Cameron says that it is the EU that needs reform!

From: Maxine Watt, Leeds.

FORMER education minister Tim Loughton was a “talented”, “effective”, “active” and “energetic” minister, Michael Gove told the House of Commons Education Select Committee.

David Cameron sacked Tim Loughton, Michael Gove told the House of Commons Select Education Committee.

Slow service at DIY checkouts

From: Mrs Gillian Paddock, Park Avenue, Hull.

I AM amazed that Mrs Jennifer Bookbinder (Yorkshire Post, January 23) finds the “do-it-yourself” checkouts at supermarkets ‘simple and easy to use’.

I only ever contemplate using one of these monsters if I have a single item to buy.

Otherwise, the likelihood is
you will encounter some unforeseen problem which necessitates a “colleague”
being summoned and you
then wait around for just as
long as if you had joined a queue to be served.
