A lesson in the use of language

From: A Mercer, Oxford Road, Guiseley.

IT was particularly moving to listen to the BBC’s radio montage of famous commentatories depicting the achievements of the great Severiano Ballesteros who you, rightly, likened to a gladiator (Yorkshire Post, May 9).

What struck me was the simple language used by some of the great voices of sport – Renton Laidlaw and the unsurpassable Peter Jones who, with regard to the 1988 Open, referred to Seve winning with “style”.

If only their successors could create such wonderful word pictures for their radio listeners.

Praise for police

From: Len Fincham, Warrels Road, Bramley, Leeds.

FOLLOWING the inquest (Yorkshire Post, May 5) into the death of Ian Tomlinson at the G20 protests, and the verdict that he was unlawfully killed, the public these days seem to have developed an attitude to police action that puts them in a bad light. Personally, I think we have an excellent police force when one only has to look at other countries, even some in the EU. Ours don’t even carry guns.

Shining example

From: Jennifer Bookbinder, Cottingley Gardens, Leeds.

YES, I do think Brian Sheridan (Yorkshire Post, April 27) is slightly deluded.

So, he loves rain, but what I don’t really see is what that has to do with his hatred of car boot sales, garden fetes and barbecues, except that they don’t need rain if they are to be a success.

Maybe that’s the link, but he should remember that a lot of people enjoy the above events and they make a good day out.
