Let these people try living in communist Korea

From: Tim Hunter, Farfield Avenue, Knaresborough.

JUST think how unbelievable it would have been, during the Cold War years, to have seen an editorial (Yorkshire Post, September 13) where high hopes were reported of a trade visit to Russia, who are now full participants in the capitalist world economy.

Russia, like virtually all the communist world in the 1980s, turned their backs on a system which restricted freedom and competition. Basically, they turned their backs on a system which went against human nature.

It is, however, incredible to see that communism is still alive and kicking in certain parts of Yorkshire. On the same page as the Editorial, there was a letter complaining about an “economic system which divides society into rich and poor” and moaning about “mechanisms like competition”.

On the previous day we saw a letter which appeared to argue for a Marxist clampdown on people’s earnings.

What these people should realise is that people are inherently competitive and unless we let the winners win, we will all and up being losers, like the poor souls who suffered for so long under communism.

I suggest these communists are sent to live in probably the last remaining communist state, i.e. North Korea so they can see how this philosophy works in practice. I’ll bet they’d be begging to be let out within a few days.
