Let the train take the strain

From Bob Watson, Springfield Road, Baildon.

YOUR report (Yorkshire Post, December 7) headed “Park and Ride plan on way for resort hit by jams” referred to Whitby, and to what is apparently an attempt to alleviate notorious tailbacks in this congested town.

It was, though, rather concerning to note that North Yorkshire Police have voiced fears regarding this proposal, commenting on its remote location, and that it could become a magnet for crime and anti-social behaviour. Not a great encouragement to use the facility should it come into being!

Surely it would be far better to consider the wider picture, and look at reinstating the railway line from Malton to Pickering, so enabling vast numbers of people from York, West Yorkshire, and further afield, to be able to travel to Whitby by train. That would be a much better way of alleviating any traffic problems.

More than halls

From: Gerald Hodgson, Spennithorne, Leyburn.

I AM encouraged that progress seems to be being made in the long-running saga of the Bradford Odeon. When considering the nature of the refurbishment I would urge the developers to look at the example of the Sage, Gateshead, not in any architectural sense but in terms of what happens in the building.

The Sage is much more than two concert halls. It encourages a huge amount of active participation from the public – in a wide spectrum of musical genres at all levels from absolute beginners to degree courses.

It is a tremendous cultural asset for the North East as a result and I would like to think that the refurbished Odeon could fulfill a similar function in West Yorkshire and give a real boost to the city of Bradford.
