Letter: Nation is being ruled by fear

I wonder why the '˜inside' politicians are saying that leaving the EU will be 'a leap in the dark'?
Captain Cook - where would we be if he'd stayed at home?Captain Cook - where would we be if he'd stayed at home?
Captain Cook - where would we be if he'd stayed at home?

They are now saying it so often that they are beginning to sound like a broken record and it often seems that they simply have nothing else left to say.

While accepting that stepping away from the EU would be breaking new ground it is what we British have always been good at.

Where would we be today if James Cook, Edward Jenner, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Michael Faraday and countless others had said “No, I’ll stay where I am”?

We British had grown into the greatest nation on earth because our best had been prepared to take “a leap into the dark”, but this faith in our abilities as explorers and inventors, engineers and visionaries has been all but destroyed over the years.

David Cameron and his cohorts say “let’s stay where we are, a tiny, dispirited ‘little England’ afraid to look at the world in a way we once took for granted”.

That is what 43 years of the EU has done for us! It is not the attitude which led to the British Empire, now the Commonwealth, and those who say we should not take that step, not into the dark but towards a bright future, should be ashamed by their timidity.

The future in the EU is far from the safe option; it is tearing itself apart with uncontrollable immigration, bankrupting itself with poor financial decisions, backward looking and failing on the world stage; why would we want to be part of it?
