Letter: Proposal a bridge too far

I do, however, like I suspect a large number of Beverley residents, believe this and the proposed South West development is a bridge too far for Beverley which will destroy the character of Beverley and almost create a new town.

Yes, we need to do our fair share of house building but over the last few years hundreds of new houses have been and still are being built in the town.

However, as we all know local views seem to count little to either councils or developers so we will at some stage see this development built.

I do have two specific concerns about the plans.

Firstly, there is to be just one access to and from the site – a new roundabout on the recently competed new road which was supposed to relieve traffic in Beverley.

Potentially there could be some 1,500 vehicles on this new development and while they won’t all be moving at the same time at rush hour times there could easily be some 800 vehicles exiting the site in some 45 minutes.

All on route to Jocks Lodge or the Swinemoor Junction, both junctions which suffer from huge tailbacks already.

Surely these problems must be addressed and solved before any other traffic can be allowed onto our roads?

The second concern I have is that there doesn’t seem to be any plans for bungalows on the development.

Only this week a report came out saying that whilst we are living longer we are not living healthier.

All of us will be old one day and when that comes we would benefit from single storey accommodation.

They do not have to be large – they could be terraced but surely a proportion of the new estate must cater for this.
